Hidden in the country’s northwestern corner, Epirus stands out as one of the most picturesque regions in Greece. Head inland from the coast to discover Zagorochoria, a collection of 46 villages nestled between rugged evergreen mountains, where you are transported to a mythical past. The ancient stone buildings, crystal-clear rivers and cobbled stoned streets instantly take your breath away! Walking through quiet narrow pathways, one keeps discovering little treasures…a charming courtyard with intricate iron worked chairs and tables, antique terra cotta pots overflowing with rosemary, thyme and other fragrant herbs, as well as lovely little shops showcasing handmade crafts from local artisans. One can spend the day exploring the beauty of these picture postcard villages or enjoy one of the many walking paths such as the ‘Hunters of the Ice Age’ trail, a two-and-a-half-hour route that winds along the shores of the Voidomatis river.
After a day of hiking and exploring the national park’s flora, we were delighted to return to our lovely hotel, the Aristi Mountain Resort, where we experienced the most delicious farm-to-table dining. As we enjoyed our meal and crisp local wine, the sky lit up during golden hour, showcasing the most magnificent evergreen mountains and beauty as far as the eye could see. An unforgettable and magical moment in one of Greece’s crown jewels.
