Meet Michelle Marquis of Precious Penman, fellow stationery enthusiast, and skilled calligrapher who helps lift the world around her through her beautiful penmanship. Born and raised in Montreal, Michelle studied the foundation of Copperplate Calligraphy from her mentor and fellow Montrealer, Joy Deneen, and has spent the past three years helping clients bring their creative visions to life, while adding a touch of whimsy to celebrations big and small. As a member of the Société des Calligraphes de Montréal, tradition and precision are at the heart of Michelle’s calligraphy, yet she goes beyond the bounds of the rules to create playful, joyous scripts, infusing life’s occasions with abundant beauty.
We couldn’t be more delighted to sit down with our dear friend to find our what Living Beautifully means to her, where she turns to for inspiration, and what she is looking forward to most this holiday season.
Where did you grow up and how has your past shaped your personal aesthetic?
I grew up in the suburbs of Montreal with my parents and younger brother. We spent most weekends at our cottage; the outdoors was my playground! I also have fond memories of visiting my grandparents’ home in New Brunswick, where I would feast into my grandmother’s arts & crafts bin. She was an Art teacher and artist who taught taught me everything…from basic shapes to Monet.
How would you describe your style?
My style is inspired by mother nature. I like to describe it as feminine, detailed and crisp.
AS A CALLIGRAPHIST AND ENGARVING ARTIST, what do you love most about what you do?
I love how my work requires a calm mind and a quiet environment. The flow state that ensues makes me feel unstoppable! Every project is a new challenge and I try to enjoy the journey just as much as the finished product.
Where do you turn to for inspiration?
My fellow calligraphers inspire me to push deeper in the study of the letterforms…their shapes, strokes, precision, individual style. On a larger scale, I love to scroll through Instagram and borrow inspiration from illustrators, muralists, interior designers, photographers, ceramic artists, you name it!
What are some of your indispensable items when entertaining and how do you ensure a memorable dinner party?
Music! It wouldn’t be a party without a mood-matching Spotify playlist playing in the background.
If you could invite any three individuals from the past, who would they be and what would you serve for dinner?
Both of my grandmothers and Princess Diana. We would have a fabulous tea party!
What does living beautifully mean to you?
Being present in the moment and being able to notice the subtle beauty of life.
How do you make every day feel special in your home?
Cleanliness plays a big part in making a home feel special. I try to make an effort to keep things tidy, even if I’m home alone. I also prefer to make use of my table lamps in the evenings to give a cozy relaxing atmosphere.
What is your typical morning routine?
A close friend and I have recently gotten in the habit of getting up for an early morning workout and following the class with a quick coffee & chat together. Our weekly catch-ups have motivated me to get up and show up! Otherwise, I try to get outside for a morning walk with a mug of homemade oat milk matcha before starting work.
How do you like to unwind after a busy day?
I make myself a good-night herbal tea in the largest mug I can find.
What do you love most about living in Montreal?
The appreciation of our four seasons. There’s always something to do!
While traveling, are there any objects you enjoy collecting?
As a cancer sign, I’m lured to any body of water. I love collecting interesting seashells and sea glass. I’ve done this for as long as I can remember
What is at the top of your bucket list?
Buy a home…in this market? Who knows?!
What are some of the greatest lessons you learned from your parents?
My parents were not overly affectionate, but over time and with maturity, I have learned that love is not always measured by public display of affection. Love can be shown in the way we treat each other, respect one another’s perspective and keep each other at top of mind in our life’s decisions.
What do you look forward to most this holiday season?
My favourite Christmas tradition is our Christmas Day brunch! We always have decadent eggs benedict with bottomless mimosas. It’s usually followed by a lazy afternoon around the fire to soak in our Christmas decorations and gifting aftermath.
